Nine months, seventeen months, two years and five months. These are the ages, according to my Mother, at which I learned to walk, speak and write. Like walking and talking, learning to write is a milestone in any person’s life. The ability to record and document your thoughts and emotions. Since first figuring out how to cognitively apply paper to pencil, I haven’t stopped. I have tried my hand at everything: stories, essays, newspaper reports, magazine articles, blogposts, poetry. My desire to write comes from a love of reading. In this site I am compiling and publishing a selection of my pieces which, I humbly hope, will bring joy to the reader.
About me
I grew up in one of Ireland’s larger cities, Derry/Londonderry/Doire in Northern Ireland. A city divided by religion and politics, yet united by art, music and a unique expressionism. From a young age I learnt of the Irish literary greats, including Derry’s own Seamus Heaney, as well as the linguistic acrobatics required to successfully communicate the name of our home without offence. Such was born a love of the written and spoken word.
After mixing arts and science through school, I focused on the former when attending Trinity College, University of Dublin (studying History and Political Science). A wayward holiday after four years in Dublin resulted in a career in public relations in Singapore, which has morphed through digital marketing consultancy into a global communications role for one of the world’s leading non governmental organisations.
I have been fortunate to travel the world, visiting six of the seven continents and meeting many fascinating individuals along the way. Throughout, I have carried pen and paper. I have written for studies, for publication, for work and clients, and purely for pleasure. Undoubtedly, many of my life choices have been made with the subconscious realisation that they would give me the freedom to write. Long may it continue.
